On November 1, 1946, Ossie Schectman made history by becoming the first person to score a basket in the new Basketball Association of America (later the NBA). As a member of the New York Knicks, he scored the first two points against the Toronto Huskies in a game played in Canada. His basketball skills as a solid guard were honed playing for Clair Bee’s Long Island University squads that won two NIT championships, in 1939 and 1941. After graduating he joined the Philadelphia SPHAS and was a member of teams that won two American Basketball League titles in five seasons. He played only one year with the Knicks, when they lost in the playoffs to the eventual champions, the Philadelphia Warriors. He then rejoined the ABL, this time starring with Paterson, New Jersey.
